What is AI search and why your business should care
For twenty years, finding a business online meant typing into Google and scrolling a list of links. That is changing. A growing number of people now ask an AI tool such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, or the AI answer at the top of Google, and they get one short answer instead of ten blue links.
That short answer usually names a few businesses and links to a few websites. If yours is one of them, you get a customer who already trusts the recommendation. If not, they may never know you exist. This guide explains what is going on in plain English, and how to check where you stand in a few minutes.
What “AI search” actually means
AI search is when a tool reads the web for you and writes the answer. Ask “who is the best roofer in Denver?” and the AI runs its own searches, reads a handful of pages, and summarizes them. Under the answer it shows its sources: the websites it relied on.
Those sources are the new front page. The businesses the AI names, and the sites it links to, get the click and the phone call.
Why it matters for a small business
There is no page two in an AI answer. A list of ten links becomes a few names. And the sources the AI trusts are often not the businesses themselves.
In our own test of 15 questions like “best plumber in Salt Lake City” and “best dentist in Phoenix,” 64% of the websites Perplexity cited were directories, review sites, or media outlets such as Yelp, Thumbtack, BBB, and WebMD. Only 28% were a local business’s own website. One results site, bestprosintown.com, showed up in 9 of the 15 answers. That was one engine on one day, but the pattern is clear: AI leans on review sites and lists, so being on those sites, and having a clear website, matters.
How to check if AI recommends you
You can do this yourself, for free, in about five minutes.
- Write down three questions a customer would ask, such as “best [your service] in [your city]” or “where to buy [your product] online.”
- Ask each one in ChatGPT and Perplexity. Note whether your business is named, and which websites are linked as sources.
- Look for patterns. Which directories and review sites keep showing up? Are you listed on them, with good reviews?
- Or run a free check on AI Cite Check. It asks Perplexity for you, lists every site it cited, tells you if you showed up, and suggests three fixes.
Simple things that help
There is no secret trick, but a few basics make it easier for AI tools to find and trust you.
- Claim and complete your listings on the review and directory sites the AI cites for your type of business.
- Ask happy customers for reviews on those same sites.
- Give your website a clear page for each main service and city, with a short, direct answer near the top: what you do, where, and why customers pick you.
- Keep your name, address, phone, and hours the same everywhere.
